Free jazz is de jazzstijl waarin de vertrouwde structuur van een ‘song’, bestaande uit akkoorden, melodieën en vaste ritmische patronen en tempo, grotendeels ontbreken en waarin energievaak de plaats inneemt van schoonheid. Spontaniteit staat daarbij hoog in het vaandel. Free jazz ontstond als min of meer officiële stroming in 1960, het jaar waarin altsaxofonist Ornette Coleman een album getiteld Free Jazz uitbracht. Hij speelde akkoordloze stukken, waarin melodie en ritme het voor het zeggen hadden. In de jaren zestig was de term avantgarde een synoniem voor free jazz en in de decennia die volgden gaven de meeste musici zelfs de voorkeur aan dit eerste label omdat zij het woord ‘free’ misleidend vonden: hun muziek was namelijk vaak (toch) zeer georganiseerd.
Bossa nova is de combinatie van jazz met Braziliaanse samba. De ‘nieuwe golf’, zoals de letterlijke vertaling luidt, was een feit toen zanger/gitarist João Gilberto in 1957 het nummer Desafinado uitbracht, geschreven door Antonio Carlos Jobim. In de bakermat Rio de Janeiro wint de rustige jazzy muziek snel aan populariteit en dan vooral onder de studenten. Door de film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus, 1959) breekt de bossa nova ook door in de Verenigde Staten. Musici uit de cool jazz voelden zich aangetrokken tot de subtiele swing en de harmonische rijkdom van deze ‘bossa nova’ en gingen aan de slag met oorspronkelijke bossa’s, bewerkingen en eigen composities in de nieuwe stijl. Het album Jazz Samba van saxofonist Stan Getz en gitarist Charlie Byrd (1962) en de plaat Getz/Gilberto (1963, met de bekende Jobim-compositie The Girl From Ipanema) werden gigantische bestsellers die aan de wieg stonden van een enorme bossa nova-rage. Niet alle experimenten met jazz en samba mondden uit in het bossa nova ritme. In deze restgroep, die brazilian jazz is genoemd, speelt percussie een belangrijke rol.
