Het musicalgenre is een theatervorm die muziek, liederen, gesproken tekst en dans combineert. Voorlopers van de musical waren klassieke genres als komische opera's en operettes; maar ook volksvermaak als variété, burleske en ‘minstrel shows'. Aanvankelijk was een Amerikaanse musical niet veel meer dan een revue met grappige sketches en losstaande liedjes. Show Boat (1927) was de eerste hoogwaardige musical. Het zette de standaard voor latere musicals en bewees dat het genre ook serieuze onderwerpen aankon. Naast theaterproducties ontstond een gigantische filmindustrie die talrijke musicalfilms maakte: zoals de muziek- en dansfilms met sterren als Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers en Gene Kelly. In de jaren zestig waren het Annie M. G. Schmidt en Harry Bannink die voor het eerst een originele (niet-vertaalde) Nederlandse musical schreven (Heerlijk Duurt Het Langst). Toch duurde het nog decennia totdat er – mede door pionierswerk van Joop van den Ende en (later) Albert Verlinde - ook in Nederland een bloeiende musicalcultuur ontstond.
Punk is een eind jaren zeventig ontstane stijl met alle kenmerken van de oorspronkelijke rock-‘n-roll: simpel, opwindend en rebels, maar dan harder, sneller en agressiever. Hardcore is daarvan weer de overtreffende trap. Van oorsprong een subversief fenomeen met een sterke doe-het-zelf ethiek en deel uitmakend van een bredere culturele beweging met uitgesproken ideeën over mode en grafische vormgeving. De Britse tak (The Sex Pistols, The Clash) is daarbij een stuk politiek bewuster dan de Amerikaanse (The Ramones, The New York Dolls), mede door de slechte sociaaleconomische situatie in het Engeland van de jaren zeventig. Vanaf halverwege de jaren negentig is punk vooral een commercieel succesvolle stroming. Deze moderne vorm van punkrock wordt door Bad Religion in gang gezet, waarna navolger Green Day zowaar uitgroeit tot een heuse stadionband. Punk kent veel substijlen, zoals anarchopunk, emo, oi!, pretpunk en straight edge.
