Johnny Cash, de onvervalste ‘outlaw’ die liedjes zong alsof hij als cowboy aan het kampvuur zat, schreef in de jaren vijftig country- en rockabillygeschiedenis op het Sun-label. De ongepolijste en charismatische Cash werd aan het eind van de jaren zestig een superster in Amerika, compleet met een eigen tv-show en een glanshuwelijk met June Carter. In de jaren negentig bracht Cash zijn American Recordings albums uit, die juichend werden ontvangen. Op deze cd’s zong Cash een divers repertoire: van volksliedjes tot alternatieve rockcovers. Cash slaagde er in om een eigen unieke stijl te scheppen, een amalgaam van gospel, folk, rock en vooral country. Vier maanden nadat zijn vrouw overleed, stierf Cash op 12 september 2003. In 2005 bereikte Cash postuum een enorm publiek toen zijn leven werd verfilmd in Walk The Line.
John Lee Hooker was de meest oorspronkelijke van de elektrische bluesgiganten. Talloze artiesten werden geïnspireerd door zijn spookachtige muzikale minimalisme, van tijdgenoten als Slim Harpo tot navolgers als The Rolling Stones. Hooker koppelde klagelijke maar krachtige vocalen aan gedreven en percussief gitaarspel. Weinigen kunnen tippen aan de onverklaarbare erotische lading die de kern vormt van zijn beste optredens. Het gepatenteerde "boogie" ritme, waarop vrijwel ieder bluesrockband en hardrockband van de jaren zeventig zijn nummers baseerde, is min of meer uitgevonden door Hooker. Met meer dan 100 albums op talloze labels was Hooker een van de meest opgenomen bluesmannen van na de oorlog, met zijn werkgebied veelal in Detroit en Chicago. Hij bleef werken tot ver na zijn tachtigste. Hooker opende zijn eigen bluesclub in San Francisco en werd in 2000 met een Grammy for Lifetime Achievement onderscheiden. Hij overleed het jaar daarop, op 83-jarige leeftijd.
Ook de zogenaamde ‘jubilee quartets’ speelden een mengvorm van spirituals, blues en jazz. De vocale acrobatiek was bij deze kwartetten minstens zo belangrijk als de blije Bijbelse boodschap. Dat maakte deze groepen, met het Golden Gate Quartet voorop, bijzonder populair in de jaren dertig en veertig. De invloed van deze kwartetten is terug te horen in diverse muziek: van doo-wop tot soul en zelfs r&b.
Na twee weinig succesvolle psychedelische folkalbums onder de naam Tyrannosaurus Rex, besluit frontman Marc Bolan in 1970 het roer radicaal om te gooien: niet alleen de naam wordt ingekort, maar de songs zijn voortaan ook direct en ruig. Opwindende refreinen en stevige rockriffs kernmerken T. Rex’ nieuwe repertoire. Daarmee staat de groep te boek als één van de uitvinders van glamrock. Tussen 1970 en 1973 behoort T. Rex vooral in hun eigen Engeland tot de absolute topgroepen en is krullenbol Marc Bolan een gewild sekssymbool. Daarna neemt de belangstelling snel af, maar de opkomst van punk in 1976 heeft een positief effect op Bolan, die wordt gezien als één van de grondleggers van het genre. Helaas kon hij niet lang genieten van zijn hernieuwde sterrenstatus. Hij overlijdt in 1977 na een auto-ongeluk.

Howlin’ Wolf (echte naam: Chester Burnett) geldt als één van de meest belangwekkende bluesartiesten ooit. De, ook in letterlijke zin, grote zanger/gitarist was een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor onder meer The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors en Eric Clapton, die allen in zijn catalogus grasduinden. Burnett werd in 1910 geboren in Mississippi en trok, net als veel andere Afro-Amerikanen, noordwaarts voor werk. In Chicago werkte hij samen met songschrijver Willie Dixon en nam hij op voor het legendarische Chess Records. Mede door zijn stabiele persoonlijkheid was ‘Wolf’ één van de weinige bluesmuzikanten die niet berooid eindigde. Burnett overleed in 1976.
