Hard bop is een eenvoudigere, meer aardse vorm van bebop met kortere, eenvoudigere thema’s en de toevoeging van blues, funk- en gospelelementen. Repetitieve en meer op dans georiënteerde ritmes werden belangrijker dan inventieve complexe harmonieën en ingewikkelde improvisaties. Op de plaat verschilde de hard bop ook om een andere reden van de bebop. Op de 78-toerenplaten hadden de oude boppers maar vier minuten per kant om hun verhaal kwijt te kunnen. Met de komst van de langspeelplaat (vanaf 1948) kon de luisteraar ook thuis luisteren naar hardbop-improvisatoren die meer tijd hadden om hun muzikale ideeën te ontwikkelen.Saxofonist Cannonball Adderley en zijn cornet-spelende broer Nat speelden begin jaren zestig een vorm van (hard) bop die was doorspekt met gospel-invloeden. Hun stijl werd gepromoot als soul jazz en de band scoorde grote hits met stukken als Work Song en Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. Naarmate er meer gebruik werd gemaakt van een strak ritme en repetitieve ‘grooves’ werd er ook wel gesproken van funk jazz. Het werk van musici als gitarist Grant Green en saxofonist Eddie Harris is nog steeds van grote invloed op hedendaagse bands als New Cool Collective.
Jazzrock is een onderdeel van fusion en staat in het algemeen voor iedere mengvorm van jazz en rock en in het bijzonder voor de stijl die aan het eind van de jaren zestig werd ontwikkeld door Miles Davis en zijn discipelen. Davis maakte met In A Silent Way de elektrische tegenhanger van Kind Of Blue. Vervolgens zette hij met Bitches Brew de jazzrock definitief op de kaart. Miles’ band uit die periode lijkt achteraf een soort jazzrock-conservatorium te zijn geweest met alleen maar briljante studenten die klaar waren gestoomd voor een succesvolle carrière met een eigen band. John McLaughlin formeerde het legendarische Mahavishnu Orchestra en Wayne Shorter en Joe Zawinul begonnen het gerenommeerde Weather Report. Chick Corea richtte Return To Forever op en Herbie Hancock maakte in 1973 met Headhunters het best verkopende jazzalbum tot dan toe.
Op geluidsdrager verzamelde muziek uit een speelfilm. Het fenomeen komt op in de jaren vijftig maar neemt een hoge vlucht als de soundtracks van Grease en Saturday Night Fever miljoenenverkopen halen. Het gaat dan nog om muziek die speciaal voor de film is gecomponeerd. Tegenwoordig wordt vaak van bestaande muziek gebruik gemaakt. Het komt ook voor dat de muziek op de soundtrack vaak nauwelijks te horen in de film, of slechts tijdens de aftiteling. Filmmaatschappijen brengen soundtracks uit met zoveel mogelijk bekende artiesten er op, in de hoop dat het nummer op de radio wordt gedraaid en dat de titel van de film er bij wordt genoemd, Omgekeerd krijgen artiesten vaak aanzienlijke bedragen en kan het succes van een filmsoundtrack helpen bij hun populariteit.
