Oorspronkelijk de van generatie op generatie overgedragen volkseigen of regionale muziek, bestaande uit verhalende liedjes voor elke gemoedstoestand en gelegenheid: liefde, blijdschap, verdriet, bruiloft, werk, overspel, ziekte, dood, enzovoorts. Kent daardoor zeer veel uiteenlopende gezichten, al worden in het Westen meestal de Noord-Amerikaanse en Engelse variant bedoeld. De scheidslijnen met blues, country en singer/songwriters is vaak dun. Folkliedjes zijn vaak zo oud dat de oorspronkelijke componist onbekend is. In de jaren dertig speelden Alan Lomax en Harry Smith een belangrijke rol bij het conserveren van Amerikaanse folksongs. Zij trokken naar het platteland om daar de oude volksliedjes op te nemen. In de jaren zestig leefde folk weer op aan de hand van een jonge, naoorlogse generatie. Popgenres die gebruik maken van folkinvloeden zijn americana, folkrock en folkmetal. De avontuurlijke combinatie van folk met alternatieve pop die na 2000 opkomt wordt ‘freakfolk’ genoemd.
Braziliaanse popmuziek en dance. Moderne Braziliaanse muziek wordt vaak aangeduid met het paraplubegrip Música Popular Brasileira, of kortweg MPB. Voorloper hiervan was de tropicália beweging, soms ook tropicalismo genoemd. Muzikanten als Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil en Jorge Ben Jor beginnen eind jaren zestig traditionele muziek met psychedelische rock te vermengen. Door hun kritische teksten worden de meeste tropicáliamuzikanten door het militaire regime geboycot. Terzelfder tijd komen een aantal MPB-iconen op, zoals Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento en Elis Regina, die aan de ene kant leunen op traditionele genres, maar aan de andere kant niet bang zijn om te experimenteren met modernere stijlen. Deze lijn van muzikanten met een eigen karakteristiek geluid, loopt door tot dit moment. Marisa Monte en Chico César geven in de jaren negentig de MPB een nieuw geluid. Ook op dansgebied heeft Brazilië meer te bieden dan de samba alleen. De lambada-rage uit de jaren tachtig vindt zijn oorsprong in het noordoosten van dat land, waar Afrikaanse en Caribische invloeden groot zijn. Ook uit die regio komt de axé, een opzwepende mix van Braziliaanse reggae en percussie. Daniela Mercury en Ivete Sangalo maakten deze muziek vanaf de jaren negentig populair.
