Afro-Caribische muziek, ontstaan op de Britse en Franse eilanden. Hoewel calypso wordt gespeeld in verschillende Frans- en Engelstalige Caribische eilanden, ligt de bakermat ervan in Trinidad. Hier werd het carnaval door calypsozangers aangegrepen om hun publiek niet alleen aan het dansen te krijgen, maar hun ook een boodschap over te brengen. Van feitelijke nieuwsberichten tot scherpe kritiek op de corrupte leiders van het land, naast muzikant waren de zangers ook een soort journalist. Troubadours, zouden we ze in de middeleeuwen hebben genoemd. In Trinidad kende calypso een opleving aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Vijftig jaar later nam het genre ook internationaal een vlucht, toen Amerikaanse muzikanten hun eigen interpretaties vertolkten van calypsonummers. Denk aan Rum and Coca Cola van de Andrew Sisters en de Banana Boat Song van Harry Belafonte (hoewel dit eigenlijk een Jamaicaans slavenlied is). Soca ontstond uit een mix van calypso en Indiase muziek. De naam zelf is een afkorting van soul en calypso. Soca is echte feestmuziek, met dito teksten. In Jamaica ontwikkelde zich halverwege de twintigste eeuw een muzieksoort die sterke gelijkenis vertoont met calypso. Uit deze mento zou zich later ska ontwikkelen.
Reggae is lome, van oorsprong Jamaicaanse dansmuziek, via ska en rocksteady ontstaan uit een fusie van New Orleans rhythm & blues en diverse Afro-Caribische muziekstijlen als calypso, mento en rumba. Kenmerkend voor reggae is de offbeat, waarbij het ritmische accent valt op de derde tel van de vierkwartsmaat. De instrumentale dub, ritmetracks met ruimtelijke geluidseffecten, vormen aanvankelijk de b-kanten van de reggaesingles. Later groeit het genre, aan de vaardige hand van Lee Perry en King Tubby, uit tot een volwaardig subgenre. De variant waar wordt gerapt (‘toasting’) over oudere tracks wordt dancehall genoemd. De combinatie met hiphop en digitale techniek levert ragga(muffin) op, de combinatie met latinritmes en hiphopbeats wordt reggaeton genoemd. Zowel ragga als reggaeton kenmerken zich door de expliciete teksten waarin de performer opschept over seks en geweld.
