Rock-‘n-roll is de oervorm van de popmuziek, halverwege de jaren vijftig ontstaan uit een samensmelting van country & western en rhythm & blues. Het is ook de eerste specifieke tienermuziek, daarom eenvoudig, rebels en opwindend en staat daarom aan de basis van de rockmuziek. Veel rock-’n’-roll-teksten stonden stijf van de pikante toespelingen, zowel ‘rocking’ als ‘rolling’ waren eufemismen voor het bedrijven van de liefde. Conservatieve ouders en docenten walgden van de schokkende heupen van Elvis en de oerschreeuw van Little Richard. Ondanks die tegenwerking hebben de rock-‘n-rollers een grote invloed op de vruchtbare beat- en rockgeneratie van de jaren zestig. Ironisch genoeg luidt de sixties-generatie ook het einde van de glorietijd van de rock-‘n-roll. Als zelfstandige stijlvorm wordt rock-‘n-roll vanaf de jaren zeventig nog slechts mondjesmaat beoefend door fanatieke groepjes. Een karakteristieke uitdossing met leren jas, blue jeans en vetkuif hoort er uiteraard bij.
De term rhythm & blues werd in 1948 bedacht door platenbaas Jerry Wexler als vervanging van de dubieuze term ‘race music’. Dat was een overkoepelende term voor alle muziek van Afro-Amerikaanse origine. Vanaf de jaren veertig werd rhythm & blues een stijlaanduiding voor muziek die elementen uit jazz, blues, boogie-woogie en gospel samensmolt. Daarmee is het de voorloper van latere genres als soul en rock-‘n-roll. Rhythm & blues deelt de doorleefde voordracht met soulmuziek, terwijl het opzwepende ritme en de realistische teksten een voorbode zijn van de rock’-n’roll. In Engeland is het in de jaren zestig de benaming voor groepen als The Rolling Stones, The Animals en Cream. Het geluid van deze Britse groepen was meer gitaar georiënteerd en daardoor harder dan die van hun zwarte voorgangers. Vanaf de jaren zeventig werd het gangbaar om die afsplitsing ‘rock’ te noemen.
Vocale jazz is iedere jazzstijl, waarin de menselijke stem de hoofdrol speelt. In tegenstelling tot de instrumentale jazz zijn het de vrouwen die de vocale jazz domineren. Toen de jazz als stijl was geboren, eisten ze een plaatsje op in de frontlinie van bands van pioniers als Louis Armstrong (Lil’ Hardin) en Duke Ellington (o.a. Ivie Anderson). Tijdens de swing-periode kwamen twee zangeressen op die tot op de dag van vandaag hun stempel op de vocale jazz drukken: Billie Holiday en Ella Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald zong niet alleen haar liedjes, maar gebruikte haar stem ook om te scatten, een techniek waarmee de stem wordt gebruikt om woordeloos te improviseren zoals een muziekinstrument dat zou doen. Louis Armstrong, die in zijn vroege periode de blues zowel speelde (trompet) als zong, was één van de eerste zangers die die techniek ontwikkelde. In de jaren ‘40 ontwikkelde Eddie Jefferson de zogenaamde vocalese, door teksten te schrijven op (beroemde) instrumentale jazzcomposities en -improvisaties. Een vreemde eend in de bijt was Frank Sinatra die niet alleen een popidool was, maar door velen ook wordt beschouwd als de beste mannelijke jazzvocalist aller tijden. Moderne crooners als Jamie Cullum en Michael Bublé zetten die lijn voort. Naast individuele jazzzangeressen en -zangers zijn er nog de zanggroepen, bijvoorbeeld Lambert/Hendricks /Ross, Manhattan Transfer en Take 6.
