Geen andere vrouw in de Middeleeuwen is zo invloedrijk en veelzijdig geweest als Hildegard van Bingen (1098-1179), abdis van een klooster bij Bingen aan de Rijn in Duitsland. In een patriarchale mannenmaatschappij is het wel uitzonderlijk te noemen dat pausen, keizers, koningen, aartsbisschoppen en abten Hildegard om raad vroegen, waarbij ze vaak geen blad voor de mond nam. Hildegard was theologe, geneeskundig arts, profetes, dichteres en componist. Haar boeken Physica en Cause Et Cure gaan over natuurlijke geneeskunde, Ordo Virtutum is een mysteriespel. In Scivias beschrijft ze haar visioenen en Symphonia Armonie Celestium Revelationum is een collectie van Hildegards muziek en poëzie. Dankzij het album A Feather On The Breath Of God door Gothic Voices met zangeres Emma Kirkby en dirigent Christopher Page kwam Hildegards muziek onder de aandacht van een groot publiek. Later volgden albums van het vrouwenensemble Sequentia onder leiding van Barbara Thornton. (SvdP)
Net als Leoninus is Perotinus één van de eerste componisten van meerstemmige kerkmuziek. Hij is de auteur van enkele van de bekendste polyfone werken uit de 13e eeuw, met name de vierstemmige stukken 'Viderunt omnes' en 'Sederunt principes'. Dit zijn mijlpalen in de westerse muziekgeschiedenis, omdat hier voor het eerst meer dan twee stemmen worden gecombineerd. Ook zijn het werken op een tot dan toe ongehoorde schaal, een moderne uitvoering duurt al snel ruim tien minuten. En het is ook voor moderne oren nog steeds spannend om naar deze werken te luisteren.
